On Feb 27, 2006, the Board of Selectmen of Middleborough
signed a Statement of Support for its town employees who are members of the
Guard and Reserve.
The Statement was signed by the Chairman of the Board of
Selectmen Mr. Wayne Perkins. Massachusetts ESGR Executive Director Dave St.
Germain attended on behalf of the Mass ESGR Committee and noted that it was
very appropriate that two of America's oldest institutions, the Town
Government and the Militia System were represented at the signing.
He
also stated, that the militia system in the colonies began only a couple of
towns over in Plymouth a few years after the arrival of the Mayflower, and
that the heritage of the descendants of the original militia members, is
still carried on in local units of the Mass National Guard.
In addition, the town Veterans Agent, Mr. Paul Provencher
and Sergeant First Class David Correia, recruiter for the Middleboro Armory
were also in attendance.
