About Us:  Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, ESGR, is a Department of Defense volunteer organization. We provide free education, consultation, and if necessary mediation for employers of Guard and Reserve employees. ESGR's goal is to support America's employers who share their employees with the nation to ensure our national security.
Our Mission: We will gain and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service by recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of the law, and resolving conflicts through mediation.

Annual Employer Appreciation Day on the Cape

Framingham Fire Department Receives the "Above and Beyond Award"

Framingham, Massachusetts was the site of a exciting ESGR event on Friday, March 7, 2008.  Headquarters of the Framingham Fire Department was the site of a presentation of the Above & Beyond Award to the Department for outstanding support of the military member workforce over a long period time.  Differential pay compensation for mobilized military employees, continuation of benefits, preference for hiring military,  family support, reaching out to veterans groups plus assistance to the local National Guard Armory are just a very small percentage of the wonderful things that the Framingham Fire Department accomplishes daily.

 Duel Statement of Support Signing

MA ESGR State Chair, Mr. Kenneth Forchielli and ESGR Eastern Area Chair, Mr. John Pelose presided over a duel Statement of Support  signing on Thursday, March 6, 2008. The special event was held by Sheriff James V. DiPaola of the Middlesex County Sheriff's Department. The reception was in honor of the soon to be deployed National Guard Citizen Soldier and  Deputy Sheriff, Mark O'Brien. Also present at the event was Mr. Barry Sloane, Chief Executive Officer and Co-President of Century Bank.

On February 29, 2008, during a luncheon being held at the Coast Guard Station in Boston MA., Massachusetts ESGR Committee Chair Mr. Ken Forchielli  presented Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc.  with the notable "Above and Beyond Award." This honor was presented to the company as testimony to their continued commitment to their Guard and Reserve Employees.

Luncheon with the Boss -- Coast Guard Station, Boston MA

 

The Massachusetts Committee for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve sponsors many events during the course of the year. These special  events involve ESGR Members and groups of Employers. ESGR has held these events to celebrate the partnership between the committee and employers who have members of the guard and reserve on their staff.  One of the many gatherings is called: "Luncheon with the boss".

Premiere Medical Staffing Signs a Statement of Support 

 

On February 28, 2008, an Armed Forces Connection's Diversity Job Fair was held in the Conference Center of The Marriott Hotel in Burlington, MA. ESGR Members Mr. John Pelose, Dr. Thomas Mulvaney and Mr. Leo Lazo attended the fair.  Our Members were there not only to man an informational booth, but also to approach various companies and employers to obtain Statements Of Support signatures.

On February 28, 2008, Massachusetts ESGR Committee Program Support Specialist  David St. Germain paid a visit to Environmental Services Incorporated (ESI) in Attleboro, MA. Massachusetts Army National Guard Family Covenant Signing Ceremony

 

On February 21, 2008, the Massachusetts National Guard Family Programs held a Family Covenant Signing Ceremony at the Massachusetts State House. In the hall of flags, Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray, MG Joseph Carter, BG Thomas Sellars and Command CW5 Peter Georgenes signed the covenant on behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Massachusetts National Guard.

Caritas Christi Good Samaritan Hospital  Receives Above and Beyond Award

 

Caritas Christi Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton, MA was the venue for the presentation of ESGR’s "Above and Beyond Award”.  On February 19, 2008 members of the  Massachusetts ESGR Committee presented the prestigious award to the hospital in recognition of their outstanding support of their military member employees.

Marine Reservist Signs a Statement of Support for His New Business

 

On 20 February, 2008 Mass. ESGR Program Support Specialist Dave St.Germain was busy again securing  another Statement of Support. Optimum Performance Strength and Condition Facility is a brand new business founded by Matt Chandler. What was significant about this signing is that one weekend a month and two weeks a year, Matt is Sergeant Matthew Chandler, United States Marine Corps Reserve.

On February 20, 2008, A.J. Martini, Inc., a Winchester based family owned construction firm, was the recipient of the prestigious “Above and Beyond” award from the ESGR (Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve) National office in Washington , DC .  The Martini Company has received numerous accolades and awards for its quality and professionalism in the construction industry for its work throughout New England and down the East Coast to Florida since 1950.

Mr. Arthur Mabbett, President of Mabbett & Associates, Inc. was informed by members of his firm that his presence would be needed at a conference scheduled for noon on February 17, 2008. He was presently surprised to find that the conference was to honor his firm for the support shown to Corporal Jody Freitas, a civilian Environmental Engineer and member of the Massachusetts Army National Guard. Above and Beyond Award Presented to WATD-FM Radio

On January 29, WATD-FM radio in Marshfield was the sight of a first in Massachusetts ESGR history.  An Above and Beyond Award was presented on the air, as part of a broadcast about the ESGR mission.  Accepting the award for WATD were Edward Perry, CEO, and Christine James of WATD News.

Stop & Shop Inc., Received an Above and Beyond Award

On  January 23rd, in historic Quincy, Mr. Jose Alvarez, CEO of Stop & Shop Inc., received an Above and Beyond Award for Stop & Shop’s outstanding support provided to its military member employees. Joining Mr. Alvarez in recognizing citizen soldiers was Major General Joseph Carter, the Adjutant General of the Massachusetts National Guard, Massachusetts State Chair Kenneth Forchielli, numerous company officials and ESGR members Joachim-Ingo Borowski and Roger Fortin.

BBS Tree Experts of Kingston Receives Above and Beyond Award for Outstanding Support of their Military Members

On January 1,  Massachusetts ESGR PSS David St. Germain, presided over the first ESGR event of 2008. Robert Carmody, owner of BBS Tree Experts of Kingston was the recipient of the Above and Beyond Award for outstanding support of their military members.  A small five employee operation Mar. Carmody, a Vietnam Veteran has one current employee in the National Guard and another one awaiting basic training.

New Bedford Police signs Statement of Support

On December 20, 2007 the New Bedford Police Department signed a Statement of Support for the Guard & Reserve.   New Bedford has twelve members of the force currently serving as members of the National Guard & Reserve.  Chief Ron Teachman signed the document on behalf of the Department.

November found the Massachusetts Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve convening at the Massachusetts National Guard Joint Forces Headquarters in Milford MA for a day of training. Classes included special guest speakers, general updating for all members and splitting into groups for specific training related to assignments and time in the program.

Cobblestone Restaurant shows their Support for The Guard and Reserve 

 

Historic South Sixth Street in New Bedford, Mass was the signing recently of a Statement of Support for the Guard & Reserve. Recently sold to its new owner, the Restaurant has been a downtown landmark for 18 years.  The owner was proud to sign the statement, her husband, employed as a weekend manager is a 22 year member of the Massachusetts Army national Guard.  Cobblestone's offers a ten percent discount to military members upon presentation of a military ID.  The Statement of Support is proudly displayed near the entrance with an American flag.

Woods Hole US Coast Guard Base Tour & Luncheon

 

Friday, October 26, 2007 was the date of the Woods Hole US Coast Guard Base Tour & Luncheon. Sponsored by Mass. ESGR, the event brought together Guard & Reserve member employers, military members from three components and several ESGR representatives.  Employers left the Woods Hole USCG facility amazed at the skill, leadership and knowledge displayed by Coast Guardsmen throughout the tour.  Many commented on the level of responsibility given to and assumed by young personnel only a year or two out of high school.

Above and Beyond Award Presented to Brigham & Women's Hospital Respiratory Care Director

 

In the early O-dark hundred hours of October 22nd, as weary fans of red sox nation slowly made their way home after celebrating a world series victory.  Members of the Massachusetts ESGR Committee were up and heading into Boston, the purpose was to attend a 6:00 AM group meeting at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital (BWH). The early hour was selected to fall during hospital shift changes, a time that  accommodated and allowed a maximum number of key individuals to attend.

Massachusetts Business Roundtable Hosts the 2007 National Conference

The Massachusetts Business Roundtable hosted the 2007 national conference of business roundtable/ council executive directors from twenty states that was held in Chatham October 15-17th.  State business roundtables and councils are made up of the CEOs or senior executives of major employers in those states.  The memberships vary from 35-100 employers depending on the size of the state.   Massachusetts for example has 72 members representing the largest employers in the Commonwealth. .  (full story)

Logan Airport's Dollar Rent-A-Car Supports our Men & Women who serve in the Guard and Reserve

On Tuesday November 6th, SGT George M. Mercuri, a member of the 719th Transportation Battalion presented Mr. Richard J. Ray, Vice President of Dollar Rent-A-Car in East Boston, a U.S. Flag that had been flown over the unit Headquarters in IRAQ. The flag was presented in appreciation of Mr. Ray’s support for members of SGT Mercuri’s Army Reserve Unit.  (full story)

Patriot Funding Signs Statement of Support

On October 22, Patriot Funding of Centerville, MA on Cape Cod became the latest in a growing list of employers, public and private, who have stepped up and signed the Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve Statement of Support Certificate.  (full story)

Triple Statement of Support Signing at the Historic Amesbury Town Hall 

On Tuesday, October 16, 2007 Mayor Thacher Keezer, Fire Chief William Shute and Police Chief Michael Cronin all signed Statements of Supports. Mayor Keezer is the only serving elected head of a town or city government in Massachusetts who is also a member of the Guard and Reserve. There are four members of the Guard & Reserve employed by the Police & Fire Departments.  (full story)

On Friday, October 5, 2007 Mid Cape Tire & Auto Service Center in New Bedford, became a member of a special group of patriotic American public and private sector employers who have signed the ESGR Statement of Support Certificate.  (full story)

Service Members Scored Early and Often at the Gillette Stadium Job Fair

Jobs were being offered and both current and previous members of the armed service came in droves to submit their resumes and discuss employment opportunities. Early July 12th, the doors to the luxury level seating opened and this Country’s true Patriots were extended a warm welcome as they rode the escalator to the job fair located on the mezzanine level.  (full story)

Employers In-Process and Deploy into Military Life

BDUs and a mobility line greeted the bosses who “deployed” to Westover in July.  A line of bosses filed out the door to the Westover Club as they waited to “in-process” for the annual Employer Day held July 7. Their employees – more than 30 reservists– assisted the group as each boss received a mobility folder, shot records and other vital information before their welcome from Brig. Gen. Gentex Optics Welcomes Its Employee Back from Afghanistan

On July 18th, fellow employees and staff from the Gentex Optics plant in Dudley met in the conference room where they were recognized for their support of a fellow employee who recently returned from military deployment. During this event, Cpl Shetland spoke first hand about military life in Afghanistan and the importance of receiving support from his employer.   (full story)

Tri-State Truck Center Extends Best Wishes to one of its Own 

The Tri-State Truck Center of Shrewsbury became one extended family on May 25th as SGT Steve Harrop prepared to leave his civilian employment and deploy with his unit in the Massachusetts Army National Guard.  During a short but highly charged and emotional ceremony, company employees joined with Mr. Kevin Holmes, President of Tri -State Truck Company, as he expressed his feelings for SGT Harrop as an employee.   (full story)

FLIR Receives the Above & Beyond Award

On June 13th, The Massachusetts State Chair attended a special award ceremony at FLIR Systems in Billerica where MAJ John Hodge, a member of the Individual Ready Reserve, was presented with a flag case from his employer. The case contained a large American flag with certificates documenting the flag had flow over the Pentagon on Memorial Day and then flown outside FLIR Systems the next day.   (full story)

Proven Process Medical Devices Site of ESGR Triple-header Event

Proven Process Medical Devices, Mansfield, MA was the site on July 27 of a ESGR triple-header event.  Alongside around 30 of his fellow employees, Seaman Alexander L'Esperance of the Navy Reserve, began the program by presenting a Patriot Award to Operations Manager Brian Valentine.  (full story)
